Come build Laser Microphones (!) with esteemed light-manipulator Lorah Pierre.
Light artist Lorah Pierre will guide participants through the stages required to make these laser microphones and will engage the group on a number of activities to realise their potential usage.
The photo-phone, a device invented in 1880 by A.G. Bell, has allowed the transmission of sound vibrations along a beam of light. The technology allows the activity of distant objects to be detected by a directional light source. In the 1900s, developments to these initial ideas introduced the use of lasers and amplifiers to apply to common technologies used today. These devices have been used in surveillance and spying techniques to tap in to ‘hidden’ conversations. The same techniques can be applied to ‘eavesdrop’ on the phenomenon that takes place on a microscopic level, sonifying the life that occurs out of our immediate awareness.
